On taking things personally

“We should regard the faults of others as we do the stones in the road: we avoid them, but we do not rage against them.”

Arthur Schopenhauer

This one is tricky for me.

I come from a hot-blooded Mediterranean country.

Passion runs deep.

And passion is a beautiful thing.

Many of the best things in life need it.

Art. Creativity. Big dreams.

But passion has a downside too.

It can create inner battles.

And those battles can make it harder to stay focused and get things done.

Schopenhauer’s idea is simple.

Getting angry at every rude or foolish act

is like getting angry at a rock we trip over.

The rock is just there.

We move it aside and keep walking.

I still find this hard sometimes.

I’m trying to see people as part of reality.

How they behave reflects their character,

not a personal attack on us.

I’m about to start this book, and it feels very relevant.
